Have you ever seen a sign like this?
There are two different kinds of box signs. Some have a deep cabinet and a flat face. Some have a shallow cabinet and a deep pan face. But if you put a flat face on a pan faced cabinet the viewing surface won’t be far enough away from the light banks inside to diffuse the light. The fluorescent bulbs will show up as light stripes beneath the surface of the face, as in the picture above.
